Iren Desk

Iren

The Iren desk is a writing desk designed by Kensaku Oshiro for Poltrona Frau. The desk is made of two overlapping tops of beech plywood with ash edges covered in Pelle Frau leather. The desk is available in two versions: freestanding and wall. The freestanding version has a sawhorse base in solid ash. The wall-mounted version is supported by brackets. The Iren desk is designed to be a small domestic workstation that can easily adapt to modern lifestyles. The two overlapping surfaces slide over each other to create new work. The work surface increases from 119 cm to 149 cm when the sliding top is completely open. The name "Iren" recalls the harmony among the elements in Japanese culture. In Japanese calligraphy, "iren" (意連) refers to the invisible but deliberate continuity between points, lines, and characters. This continuous motion ensures that there is a perfect harmony between the symbols even though they appear divided.
